Zagreb’s rise a popular destination among tourists has been impressive over the past few years. Whilst there are loads of things to do and see in the Croatian capital, if you are visiting have a think about one of the more stunning excursions just an hour or so away to check out Trakošćan Castle in Varaždin County…
Trakošćan’s cultural heritage, is protected as a historical entity, which consists of the castle, the building next to the castle, the forest park with a lake and surrounding park which also includes a 3-mile long educational trail. The castle was built-in the 13th century as a rather small observation fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley. Previously owned by the Counts of Celje and later Juraj Drašković, the castle is today owned by the Republic of Croatia.
Rebuilding Trakošćan in the 19th century was one of the first restoration projects in Croatia. The Museum with collections on permanent display was established in 1953. Trakošćan, which gets over 100,000 visitors annually, has been popular recently with Asian tourists as a spot to renew wedding vowels.
